When Does Simulation Become Regret?
An initial exploration of why humans may experience regret after simulating a better alternative, while an artificial system may perform a similar counterfactual update without an established subjective feeling.
Two intelligent systems can simulate an alternative outcome, compare it with reality, and update their models. Why might one experience regret while the other merely computes an update?
The question began with Kahneman
My first reading session began with Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking, Fast and Slow. While reading about regret, one idea caught my attention. People often regret imagining that event B might have happened if they had chosen Y instead of X. It made me wonder, from a cognitive-science perspective, why people feel regret at all. I imagined two intelligent systems and began asking why simulating the “would-have-happened” part might make one system feel regret while apparently not doing so in the other.
System H — the human system
Imagine an intelligent system H: a human. The system concludes that the profitability of an outcome might have increased by 12 percent if it had chosen differently. It simulates the alternative outcome and experiences regret.

A possible five-stage chain
This led me to map a chain of five events that may participate in regret. The first four stages seem computationally describable. The fifth introduces something different: the subjective feeling associated with the comparison.

System A — the artificial system
Now consider system A: an artificial intelligent system. It goes through a similar event and estimates that the probability of success might have increased by 12 percent if it had chosen a different action. The causal chain initially appears similar. An event occurs. The system simulates an alternative, compares the imagined result with reality, and updates its model. But there is no established fifth step. According to our current understanding, the process appears to stop at model updating. We describe system A as computing an update rather than experiencing regret.

The missing variable
The difference between the two systems may involve a variable that causes the feeling of regret in one system while apparently not doing so in the other. That variable is what I am currently missing. The systems may perform structurally similar counterfactual operations while differing in whether those operations are accompanied by subjective experience.
Does consciousness explain the gap?
While thinking about the missing variable, I remembered a term someone had asked me about the previous day: consciousness. But what is consciousness? Its definition may itself be multilayered. Even if consciousness is relevant, simply naming it does not explain the mechanism producing regret. Still, it led me to consider whether cognition could generate the first four stages while consciousness contributes the felt quality of the fifth. This is only an initial possibility, not a conclusion.
“I know I don’t know”
I then remembered the Socratic statement: “I know that I do not know.” The “I do not know” part is familiar. People say it regularly. The unusual part is “I know.” Knowing that one does not know may require a system to represent and examine its own knowledge state. That suggests metacognition and perhaps some level of conscious awareness. A machine may be able to report uncertainty or represent a confidence value. The harder question is whether representing uncertainty is equivalent to experiencing the awareness of not knowing.
What does it mean to feel?
This led me to a more difficult set of questions.
- What does it mean when I say that I feel?
- What evidence would convince us that a system actually felt regret rather than merely computed an update?
- Could regret emerge from cognition without requiring consciousness?
- Could an artificial system behave as though it regrets without having subjective experience?
- What observation could distinguish simulation from feeling?
Regret at an intersection
I am beginning to wonder whether regret sits at the intersection of cognition, cognitive processes, metacognition, counterfactual simulation, self-representation, and consciousness. A system may need to simulate an alternative, evaluate the difference, connect the alternative to its own earlier action, and represent that difference as personally meaningful. The computation alone may not explain why the comparison hurts. But naming consciousness as the answer does not yet explain the missing mechanism either.
Why this question matters to my work
I have always been fascinated by how intelligent systems learn, reason, evaluate, simulate, and predict when truth is not directly accessible. Regret introduces another layer. It asks not only how a system updates after comparing reality with an imagined alternative, but whether and how that comparison becomes an experience.
