I entered this conversation because my work repeatedly crosses engineering, software, cognition, design, and intelligent systems. I want to understand artificial systems not merely as manufactured objects, but as goal-directed systems operating within environments and constraints.

The System Between an Inner and Outer Environment
I entered this book expecting a discussion of artificial objects, but the deeper question appears to concern how designed systems fit between internal organization and an external environment.
This changes how I view engineering and software. A system is not designed in isolation. Its structure is shaped by what it is trying to accomplish and by the environment in which it must operate.
